Weight Loss 101 for Diabetics

Diabetics needs to lose weight to avoid complications Diabetics may either be overweight or underweight. Studies have shown that diabetes patients have indicated that 9 out of 10 have problems with their weight. For this reason, doctors and health care practitioners have come up with programs and healthy diets that would help diabetics to realize that losing weight could create a big impact on how they can very well manage the disease.

Also, 1 out of every 5 people who are diabetics and at the same time overweight have more than one metabolic problem. Problems like hypertension and high cholesterol level are dangerous enough. Once you bring diabetes into the mix, this could definitely lead to a very serious health problem. These problems, you have to remember, have the potential to be fatal once ignored.

So in case you or your loved ones are overweight and suffering from diabetes, the most obvious remedy is to lose weight. However, a relative of a diabetic must be very patient as every diabetic would tell you that losing weight is easier said than done. They also know the importance of dieting and they usually start out on a diet all excited and eager for success and do pretty well for the first few days. But after a few days or weeks, their old eating habits would start to creep back into their lifestyle. Once they acquire their old habits, the condition would only get worse.

Diabetics however don’t have to feel low since being diagnosed with diabetes is not a good reason to stop living. All you need are some lifestyle changes if you care about your health. And one of the first steps is your diet. The dietary guidelines for someone with diabetes are basically the same as for non-diabetics.

The American Diabetes Association now acknowledges that the entire amount of carbohydrates eaten during the day is what really matters and not the source. Regular meals, each with the same amount of starch, can be very crucial in controlling the blood sugars. So, the best to eat are whole-wheat or rye bread, pasta, couscous and brown rice since all these mentioned are low in GI or Glycaemic Index foods.

Also, fruits and vegetables can provide countless benefits to the body. These are good sources of vitamins, minerals and fiber. Legumes, which are high in fiber and low in fat, can serve as a good alternative to red meat. They can also help control blood sugars. Diabetics with normal renal function do not have to change their protein intake since they can still consume small portions of these foods everyday. Diabetics need to opt for low fat or fat free dairy products and remove all fat from meat and skin from chicken.

And of course, enough exercise is crucial to people with diabetes. It helps manage blood sugar and will protect you against the long-term health risks associated with diabetes including heart disease, obesity, stroke and many other diseases.
