Undergoing A Weight Loss Regimen Helps Cure Sleep Apnea
Scientists at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden discovered that a simple weight loss can help obese men treat their sleep apnea. In the British Medical Journal, it revealed a 50-percent reduction in sleep apnea cases after a rigorous weight loss regimen where each participant lost an average of around 42 pounds throughout the study.
Sleep apnea is a common disease for overweight people particularly in men. This is actually a disorder where breathing is interrupted during sleep because of a blocked or collapsed airway. Most people suffering from sleep apnea must sleep with a continuous positive airway pressure or CPAP machine to ensure healthy breathing and to eliminate the symptoms associated with said disorder.
So instead of using the machine, scientists have that the best way to solve the sleep apnea disorder is to lose weight. An approximate of 20 percent of study participants who lost huge amounts of weight were declared to be completely cured from sleep apnea. Participants in the said study who suffer the most severe cases of the sleep disorder truly benefited the most from the weight loss program and experienced the best results.
To ensure weight loss, participants were placed on a very low calorie diet composed of low-calorie food powder. It is mixed with water and served as a meal replacement for every meal of the day hence rapid weight loss is achieved. Following the study, participants were invited to join in a behavioral change program which is designed to maintain a healthy weight.
The problem with overweight people is that it might obstruct the physical movement of air through the trachea and into the lungs. Thousands, even millions of people suffer from this problem hence it also indicates that obesity is also a growing concern for many. Sleep apnea is virtually unheard in some developing nations where fewer people are obese.
Solving the obesity problem is also solving your sleep apnea. Aside from this, other health benefits can be achieved such as the prevention of cancer, diabetes, heart disease, asthma, and even the risk of catching influenza.
The kind of lifestyle we have today can be somewhat impossible to lose weight. When people work 12 hours a day and eat processed food and spend most of their lives indoors could only mean that losing weight could be somewhat hard to achieve. The only sensible solution to maintain a healthy body weight is to change the lifestyle by giving up your old habits and pursue a more active lifestyle.
To be healthy, you need to stay outdoors. Live a simpler life with more sunlight and less stress. You need to allot more time outdoors instead of spending most of your time in front of the television or computer. These are the things that can make a real difference. The curing of sleep apnea is just a side effect of choosing to pursue a healthier lifestyle.
