Understanding the Different Types of Obesity
Being overweight and the feeling of being overweight are two different things. It is true that obesity is not a healthy condition but there are still some people that have a wrong assumption of what an obese is. For figure conscious, they think that they are already overweight where in fact they are not. Some would immediately try to lose weight using diet pills or dieting which may not be good if not supervised by a health expert.
The first thing that we should know is how to determine if you already have excess weight and fats in your body. The problem of obesity is mainly caused by too much fats stored in the body. There are many contributing factors that may cause this health condition. It can be due to age, lifestyles, genes, and other health conditions that trigger obesity. The gender of the person would also affect in determining their type of obesity. For women, a waist measurement of more than 35 inches is already considered having a higher health risk while for men, the waist measurement of more than 40 inches could lead to other health problems because of their fat distribution.
The simple measure for obesity is by using the body mass index (BMI). It can be classified into three. Class I obesity is having a BMI of 30-34.9. You are into class II, your BMI is 35-39.9 and if you have a BMI of 40 and higher, you belong to the class III obesity which is already a major concern.
The different types of obesity depend on many factors such as its causes and origin. The various types can be discussed in this article but an understanding first of the basic types will be given consideration. Some health experts divide the types of obesity into 2 major type; Type 1 and Type 2 obesity. The first type is not caused by any disease but mainly due to lifestyle and eating habits. Too much eating and eating fatty foods are the common causes of obesity not just for adults but also to children. Eating unhealthy foods and depending too much on fast foods will definitely add more weight to an individual. Lack of exercise is also a major factor. The unused fats in the body will accumulate if you have a sedentary lifestyle. The Type 1 obesity comprises the major percentage of obese people. And this condition will lead to other health problems if not given enough attention.
The second type of obesity or the Type 2 obesity is caused by a disease or hormone imbalances in the body. It only accounts for less than 1% of obesity cases. An abnormal weight gain occurs even if the person does not eat too much. Some causes of this type are cushing syndrome, hypothyroidism, polycystic ovarian disease, and insulinoma. People suffering from hypothyroidism experiences a drop in metabolism. Weight gain occurs as a result of low calorie consumption. In the case of cushing syndrome, abdominal obesity occurs where most of the fats gather around the body. It is also characterized by the thinning of the arms and legs. There are instances where the hypodermis cracks from sudden weight gain causing line marks on the abdomen, groin, underarm, and back.
Treatment for these two types differs. For the Type 1 obesity, general obesity treatment methods are applicable. Simple diet programs and exercise regimens are commonly recommended to treat this condition. The use of appetite suppressant pills can be included in the treatment to fasten the weight loss process. However, the type 2 obesity requires a more complex approach and medical intervention is needed. In order to effectively treat the obesity, the underlying cause should be treated first. For example, patients with hypothyroidism should be given medication first to correct the hormonal imbalance. Once this condition is controlled or cured, weight loss will follow.
